HISTORY of the HUMANS

In 4th Primary Science this year, our final
two units (14 and 15) were about human history,
from Primitive Times to the Present Here and Now.
Here below are compilations
of the research poster projects
that we did for these units.
(Just click to enlarge.)
“The Past actually happened,
but History is only what someone wrote down.”
- A. Whitney Brown
“We are not makers of History.
We are made by History.”
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Those who do not remember the Past
are condemned to repeat it.”
- George Santayana
“I like the dreams of the Future
better than the history of the Past.”
- Thomas Jefferson
“You see things; and you say “Why?”
But I dream things that never were;
and I say “Why not?”
- George Bernard Shaw

Our CAC Children's Council Meeting

Our 4th-year students have been studying the democratic process in the
Social Sciences end of our Science books. Last Wednesday, we had
an opportunity to actively participate and vote in a democratic,
decision-making Children's Council at the Museo Príncipe Felipe in
the Ciudad de Artes y Ciéncias.

In the weeks before the council meeting, we proposed and discussed
different ideas for new permanent exhibitions at the museum.
We finally decided to promote two ideas:
1)  a large, suspended-from-the-ceiling, proportionally-accurate model of
the Solar System, with interesting and easy-to-understand information for
us to read and learn, and game and colouring activities for fun at the end.
2) the Evolution of Human Beings: who we were and who we are.
We liked the idea of photo-op cutout boards of a man and a woman from
different eras of time, dressed in the clothing and with objects from that time,
with simple yet interesting explanations of what life was like for people then.

Our ideas were proposed (Ed.note -Thanks Aida, Paula, Maria & Lydia.)
to the other children in the council from other participating schools.
While they weren't the ideas chosen, our teachers were proud of us
because in the end, we voted for other ideas we thought were better.
Democracy at its best.

Here are a few photos of our 4th-year council representatives in action.

SPANISH Traditions and Festivals

Traditional Festivals in Spain

Our 4th Primary classes researched some of Spain's
most famous festivals and the traditions that they include.
They then created explanatory posters with fancy titles,
colorful images and text to summarize their findings
about the typical customs, costumes, dishes, dances,
music and (sometimes) mayhem that one can experience
in these traditional, local celebrations.

Here are a few photos of their projects, hanging in
our corridors at Colegio Internacional Ausias March.
If you're interested in knowing more, here is a web page link
that we used for our research.

In Spain, traditions reign supreme.
We think that these traditions need to be maintained,
respected and taught to future generations, as a way
of learning about our important past.

(Plus, who doesn't like a party, am I right?)

CIAM Visita al Parque Infantil de Tráfico

Our 4th Primary groups learned about road safety
and first aid at the Parque Infantil de Tráfico
in the Viveros Park in Valencia.
We appreciate the course, the patience and the
explanations that our Traffic Safety guides offered us.

What's the matter with MATTER?

Everything is made out of MATTER.
MATTER can exist in three physical states: SOLID, LIQUID or GAS.
All MATTER has mass (or weight) and volume (occupies space).

MATTER can undergo a CHANGE OF STATE
when the physical state changes but the matter or substance stays the same.
(Solid ice melts into liquid water;
liquid water evaporates into gaseous water vapour;
 water vapour condenses into liquid water;
and liquid water solidifies into solid ice.)

MATTER can also undergo a CHEMICAL REACTION
when the substance permanently changes into a different substance(s).
(Oxidation and Conbustion are examples of chemical reactions.)

MATERIALS are substances we use for making things.
Two classifications of materials are: NATURAL or MAN-MADE.
We choose materials that have useful properties, such as:
STRONG and RESISTANT (steel, concrete)
FLEXIBLE (leather, paper)
ELASTIC (rubber, some plastics)
TRANSPARENT (glass, some plastics)
LIGHT and RESISTANT (aluminium)
FRAGILE (ceramics)
